'Avri is great at breaking down complex ideas into understandable pieces of information'
Casey Blake, Registered Counsellor, What Now Counseling
'Just the information discussion got me curious about how my belief systems have defined my identity. I have a new awareness of myself which has helped me to "see" my children with new "eyes". I don't think I will look at another being the same again. I have a new respect for all of us. Thank you Avri.'
Ros Dockendorff, Yoga Teacher/TRE Practitioner, Kula Yoga Space
'A very open and honest person with great knowledge, who will change the way you think about sexual stereotypes and the language we use'
Sandy Rheeder, Consultant
'Avri is a good professional, dynamic and knowledgeable.'
Joana Macucule, LAMBDA

Avri Spilka is a Psycho-Sexual Educator specialising in sexual minorities. That's a fancy way of saying that Avri has a knack for making ordinarily awkward conversations about sexuality comfortable and understandable.
Sexuality is one of those things that infuses just about everything, yet most people have never learnt a vocabulary to talk about it. Actually, we've all learnt how NOT to talk about it and that if we try to, we should blush and stutter, or at the very least, talk about it in silly jokes and hushed tones.
Avri creates spaces for adults to learn about sexuality in a way that is accessible, entertaining and relevant. She gives people the words to make sense of their own experiences and identities, and a language to communicate their thoughts, feelings and desires with other people.
As a fringe dweller herself, Avri has a special place in her heart for identities and communities that don't fall into the mainstream. She works with polyamorists, kinksters, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex and transgender community, and gamers. She has also worked with homeless people who use and inject drugs.
When she's not running workshops, she works in the NGO sector with an international LGBTI organisation doing research, reports, photography, videography, and facilitation.
Avri holds a Bachelor of Journalism and Media Studies (Rhodes University), a Higher Degree Diploma in Media Studies (Rhodes University), an Expert Diploma in Sexology (Bircham International University), a certificate in Counselling Children and Adolescents (UNISA), and a Bachelor of Social Science Honours (South African College of Applied Psychology). She has recently been accepted into the Masters programme for Community-Based Counselling Psychology at WITS University.
She also heads up an online platform for sex smart conversations called ctrlaltsex, and regularly consults with the media, and has appeared on Carte Blanche, SABC, DSTV, Mix Fm, Cliff Central, 702, as well as in print media.
Avri is a member of the Psychological Society of South Africa (Gender and Sexuality Division) as well as the Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition
Avri lives in Johannesburg with her partner and five cats. Despite her best efforts, the house has no moat.
